Glad you asked. Many years ago, my
father--Curtis Berry Sr.--raced out at
Speedway Park, a race track that endured
for decades. I was too young to remember
much of his exploits on the track. But
as a young adult, I was fascinated by
the pictures of his car. When I was old
enough, I went out to the races. At the
time, which was 1984, the only track in
town was Seven Flags Raceway. I enjoyed
myself watching the races and went many
weekends, cursing the impending rain
coming over the horizon. For a few weeks
in 1986, I ran a street stock at the
track. I wasn't very competitive, but
the experience was something I'll never
forget.
Off an on, as time permitted, I went to
the track, which become Duke City
Raceway. As time went on, though, I saw
a decline in the number of fans and
drivers, and it really disappointed me.
Eventually the facility was closed.
Sandia Motor Sports opened, and I was
happy to see a top notch facility. I had
only been able to go a few times over
the years, and enjoyed myself immensely.
To make a long story short, I've always
wanted to help promote the sport within
Albuquerque in some small way. I feel
that a large town such as this, which so
happens to have a great racing
tradition, can see the level of fan and
driver support of years past. And so
I've created ABQ Racing.com to help keep
the past memories alive and help promote
the tracks here in Albuquerque and
elsewhere within New Mexico. Any and all
suggestions are welcome. Just
email me.
